Concept

The word Japandi comes from the combination of Japanese and Scandinavian style. Minimalism and the use of wood are two great factors that these worlds have in common. That’s why wood and neutral colours are the essence in this Japanese restaurant with Nordic touches located inside the office building of one of the UK’s most prosperous tech companies.

Minimalism and simple but elegant geometries give life to the different spaces of this project. The MOST team sought to evoke that Japanese tradition with functional Nordic minimalism in its floors, walls, and furniture. The plywood ceiling with its wood lines is a reinterpretation of the tatami mosaics so typical in Japanese interiors mixed with the original metal structure of the building.

Our goal as designers was to achieve that mix of styles with the wood as the main character. We explored different textures, tones, and sizes so that the spaces flow in harmony while remaining unique and elegant.

From the end grain mosaic on the floor, through the elegant furniture to the geometric lines over the ceiling. Lighting is also another important aspect, through light our spaces come to life, give intensity, and colour. Our team selected a series of modern lamps that meet the balance between Japan and Scandinavia, giving intimacy and privacy to some spaces and brightness to others.
